Are you a casualty of a fast-paced lifestyle?

RunningIf this sounds like you, it’s quite likely you don’t have time for more than the essentials, what relates to you personally. Getting things done allows no time out from your busy schedule.

What are the consequences of this approach to life?

Opting out
However much you want to opt out of involvement with others, you will find that if you have no time to participate, you have no time to live. Joys and triumphs are greater when shared. Your griefs are lessened by the sympathy and understanding of others. You can’t expect support and understanding from others, if you don’t help them when they need it.

Don’t be the person who ruins another’s day with imperious demands. Don’t walk past them with your mind fixed on the next item on your agenda without giving them the time of day.

The faster you run, the more your world gets split into two. There’s the important part which centers around you and what you have to do; and the unimportant part, those elements of your life that you have to push, cajole or coerce into doing what you want.

If you are a non-participant in anything but your schedule, courtesy, politeness or patience disappear — no time is left for anything save yourself and your concerns.

A healthier option
A world where politeness, gratitude, understanding and patience have become extinct isn’t something anyone should be happy with. Sharing in our joys and sorrows, enjoying friendships, helping others, and just taking time to appreciate the beauty and wonder of the world is a much healthier option.

Do you want to be looking at life from the sidelines or will you take time out to be thankful for the good things in your life? Will you take time to talk to those whose lives intersect with yours, find out what they enjoy, how you can help them, how you can share experiences? Or will you continue to rush headlong after your own interests, cutting a swathe through anyone who gets in your way?

Maybe now should be a time for for slowing down and remembering. Thinking about friendships you’ve let slip, work colleagues you’ve ignored and family you’ve had no time for. Getting some balance in your life will give you a chance to begin participating in the life going on around you — getting involved with the events and dealing well with the people with whom you come into contact.
